ABT Abbott Laboratories
Durable healthcare compounder, but 10% implied growth asks more than prudence allows.
The business
Abbott sells a diversified mix of medical devices, diagnostics, branded nutrition products, and established pharmaceuticals globally. It makes money through recurring demand for diabetes monitoring, cardiovascular devices, lab and point-of-care testing, pediatric and adult nutrition, and branded generics in emerging markets. The business is understandable at a high level, but product cycles, reimbursement, regulation, and clinical competition keep it partly outside a simple consumer-products circle.

Moat & management
| Moat | wide moat |
| Source | switching costs |
| Trajectory | stable |
| Management | excellent |
Abbott benefits from clinical trust, regulatory approvals, hospital workflow integration, global scale, and strong brands like FreeStyle Libre, Ensure, and Similac. The moat is durable but not impregnable because medtech and diagnostics require constant innovation, and high returns can be challenged by competing devices, pricing pressure, and reimbursement changes.
Management has generally allocated capital sensibly through disciplined acquisitions, steady dividends, controlled leverage, and reinvestment into durable franchises. Buybacks have not been a major source of per-share compounding, but the balance sheet remains conservative.
