APA APA Corporation
Cheap, cash-generative commodity producer without a moat; a fair business at a fair price, not a forever hold.
The business
APA explores for and produces oil, natural gas and NGLs, mainly in the US Permian Basin (expanded by the 2024 Callon acquisition), Egypt's Western Desert under production-sharing contracts, and the UK North Sea. It also has a stake in offshore Suriname (GranMorgu) with partner TotalEnergies. Revenue is volume times commodity prices it does not control, minus lifting, development and depletion costs.

Moat & management
| Moat | no moat |
| Trajectory | eroding |
| Management | adequate |
APA is a commodity price taker, and its assets are depleting, so it has to keep spending capital just to replace reserves. Egypt's gas pricing and Permian acreage give it some local cost edge, but nothing durable: the North Sea is in wind-down under punitive UK taxes, and Egypt carries sovereign and receivables risk. The high recent ROIC reflects the commodity cycle, not a competitive advantage.
The current team has cut debt, returned cash through buybacks and dividends and trimmed costs. Against that, the all-stock Callon deal diluted holders (share count CAGR 4.2%), and the company has a long history of value-destroying acquisitions and writedowns.

Key risks
- Sustained oil and gas price downturn, since earnings are highly levered to commodities
- Egypt sovereign, currency and receivables risk, plus North Sea fiscal policy and decommissioning liabilities
- Reserve depletion requiring ever-rising reinvestment, plus execution and cost risk on Suriname GranMorgu
Catalysts
- GranMorgu (Suriname) first oil around 2028 adding long-life, low-decline barrels
- Egypt gas price renegotiation and Permian efficiency gains lifting free cash flow for buybacks and debt paydown
