BF-B Brown–Forman
A wonderful whiskey brand in a shrinking category; the price already assumes more growth than demand will deliver.
The business
Brown-Forman makes and sells branded spirits, chiefly the Jack Daniel's family of American whiskeys, plus Woodford Reserve, Old Forester, el Jimador, Herradura and smaller premium brands. It buys grain, agave and barrels, ages product for years, and sells through distributors in more than 170 countries. Its pricing power comes from brand equity, and it earns roughly 60% gross margins. About half of sales come from outside the US.

Moat & management

Jack Daniel's is one of the world's most recognized spirits brands. Aged-whiskey inventory, global distribution and 150 years of heritage cannot be copied quickly, so pricing power and high returns on capital persist. The brand itself is not eroding. The weakness is category demand: spirits volumes are falling, younger consumers drink less, and tariffs have closed some export markets. That threatens growth more than the moat.
Brown family control brings long-term, conservative stewardship, a dividend paid for decades and sensible leverage around 2x EBITDA. Recent execution has been mixed: inventory overbuild, RTD and agave bets that disappointed, and restructuring layoffs. Buybacks have been modest and not clearly timed to cheap prices; the -21.8% share-count figure is likely a data artifact.

Key risks
- Secular decline in alcohol consumption (Gen Z moderation, GLP-1 drugs, cannabis substitution) turns cyclical softness into permanent volume loss
- Trade wars and retaliatory tariffs on American whiskey (EU, Canada provincial delistings) hitting the roughly half of sales earned abroad
- Heavy concentration in the Jack Daniel's franchise, plus aged-inventory mismatches that tie up capital when demand forecasts miss
Catalysts
- End of distributor and retailer destocking, with tariff relief restoring international growth and premium whiskey pricing
- Cost restructuring and normalized agave input costs lifting operating margin back toward historical high-20s levels
