CAT Caterpillar Inc.
Wonderful dealer-moat franchise, but priced for 25% growth it cannot deliver through a cycle.
The business
Caterpillar designs, builds and sells heavy machinery (construction, mining equipment) and engines and turbines (Energy & Transportation, including Solar Turbines and reciprocating gensets now serving data centers) through an exclusive global network of independent dealers. It earns a high-margin, recurring stream from parts and services on a very large installed base, and Cat Financial funds customer and dealer purchases. Revenue is cyclical with construction, commodities and capital spending, but aftermarket services smooth the cycle.

Moat & management
| Moat | wide moat |
| Source | scale |
| Trajectory | stable |
| Management | excellent |
The independent dealer network (about 160 dealers, decades of capital and customer relationships, parts availability and uptime guarantees) is nearly impossible to replicate, and the installed base creates switching costs and a growing annuity of services revenue. Brand and residual values support pricing, but Komatsu and Chinese OEMs (Sany, XCMG) compete in emerging markets and price-sensitive segments, so the moat is durable rather than widening outside power generation.
Margin discipline across the cycle has improved markedly under the operating-and-execution model, with share count shrinking about 3.4% a year and dividends raised for decades. Buybacks have continued at elevated valuations, and current capex is rising to expand large-engine and turbine capacity, which looks rational given data center demand but adds cycle risk.

Key risks
- Cyclical downturn in construction, mining and oil and gas capex compressing peak-level margins
- Data center power demand boom fading or turning into overcapacity after the current capacity build
- Chinese OEM competition and tariffs or trade disruption pressuring pricing and costs
- Valuation: price implies roughly 25% annual owner-earnings growth, leaving no room for a normal cycle
Catalysts
- Power generation and Solar Turbines demand from data centers and grid backup lifting mix and services revenue
- US infrastructure spending and mining capex for energy transition metals
- Services revenue target growth expanding recurring, high-margin earnings
⚠ maintenance capex ≈ min(capex, D&A), capped at FCF · Price pays for ~25%/yr owner-earnings growth over 10y (reverse DCF); model credits 7%. · Rich vs our conservative value, but a quality business is not a short — stance is WAIT for a better price, not sell.
