DECK Deckers Brands
Two strong brands with no debt priced for decline; fashion risk is real but already overpriced in.
The business
Deckers designs and sells branded footwear, mainly HOKA performance running shoes and UGG sheepskin boots and casual footwear, through wholesale partners and a growing direct-to-consumer channel. It outsources manufacturing to Asian contract factories, so it needs little capital and earns high gross margins on brand value. HOKA and UGG produce nearly all of its profit.

Moat & management
| Moat | narrow moat |
| Source | brand |
| Trajectory | stable |
| Management | excellent |
HOKA has a real performance-credibility edge with runners and podiatrists, and UGG has rebuilt itself into a disciplined, supply-constrained lifestyle brand with pricing power. Footwear brands still depend on fashion, though: UGG went through a boom and bust in the 2010s, and On, Nike, ASICS, and New Balance are going after HOKA's position, so the moat has to be won again every few years.
Management keeps no debt, holds over $1.9B of cash, runs an asset-light model with FCF above net income, and shrinks the share count about 4% a year. It sold off weaker brands to focus on its two winners and manages UGG supply to protect pricing. The CEO change in 2024 brings some execution uncertainty but no change in capital discipline so far.

Key risks
- HOKA growth is slowing as On, Nike, ASICS, and New Balance compete for running-shoe share, which could pressure pricing and wholesale shelf space
- UGG is cyclical with fashion and could repeat its past boom-and-bust, and a 23.8% operating margin is near peak with room to fall back
- Tariffs on Vietnam and other Asian sourcing raise costs, and weak discretionary spending could squeeze gross margin
Catalysts
- International and DTC expansion of HOKA, which still has low brand awareness outside the US
- Continued large buybacks at a depressed price, using the cash-rich balance sheet, should add meaningfully to per-share owner earnings
⚠ maintenance capex ≈ min(capex, D&A), capped at FCF · Net cash 1.5B credited to value (interest stripped from owner earnings to avoid double-counting). · Price pays for ~-2%/yr owner-earnings growth over 15y (reverse DCF); model credits 4%. Capped at market + 6pts. · Cheap, but still in a downtrend (down (-15% vs 200-DMA, 6m -21%)) — waiting for the trend to turn before buying (don't catch a falling knife).
