DRI Darden Restaurants
Best operator in a mediocre industry; fairly priced at ~8% implied growth, which we think it falls short of.
The business
Darden owns and operates about 2,100 full-service restaurants in the US, led by Olive Garden and LongHorn Steakhouse, plus Cheddar's, Yard House, Ruth's Chris, Chuy's and fine-dining brands. It earns money from the spread between menu prices and food, labor and occupancy costs. Its scale lets it buy, advertise and run its restaurants more cheaply than rivals. Cash goes to new units (about 2-3% a year), a large dividend, buybacks, and occasional brand acquisitions.

Moat & management
| Moat | narrow moat |
| Source | scale |
| Trajectory | stable |
| Management | excellent |
Darden's purchasing, advertising and data scale give Olive Garden and LongHorn a lasting cost and value-pricing edge over fragmented casual-dining rivals. That edge shows up in roughly 30% ROIC. Still, the category has no switching costs, consumers can trade down to fast-casual or home dining, and brand strength must be re-earned with every meal. So the moat is narrow, not wide.
Management has run the playbook with discipline: steady unit growth at high returns, a well-covered dividend, consistent buybacks that cut the share count about 2% a year, and sensible tuck-in deals (Ruth's, Chuy's) put on the shared Darden platform. Leverage of about 2.85x including leases is reasonable, though deal-driven debt bears watching.

Key risks
- Casual dining is cyclical and in long-term share decline versus fast-casual, delivery and grocery
- Wage and commodity inflation squeezing an already thin 12% operating margin
- Acquisitions of weaker concepts diluting returns, plus lease-adjusted leverage in a downturn
Catalysts
- Olive Garden delivery and value-led traffic gains taking share as weaker chains close
- Chuy's and Ruth's synergies plus steady 2% buybacks lifting per-share earnings
