ETN Eaton Corporation
Well-run, widening-moat electrical franchise, but price already bakes in a 25%/yr growth bar it likely can't clear.
The business
Eaton is a diversified industrial manufacturer of electrical equipment (circuit protection, switchgear, power distribution), hydraulics, aerospace components, and vehicle powertrain systems. Roughly half its revenue now comes from electrical products tied to data center power, grid modernization, and electrification capex. It sells through specified, engineered products embedded in customers' infrastructure and equipment.

Moat & management
| Moat | narrow moat |
| Source | switching costs |
| Trajectory | widening |
| Management | excellent |
Eaton's electrical products are design-specified into buildings, data centers, and utility infrastructure, and its aerospace/hydraulics lines carry certification and integration lock-in — these create real but not insurmountable switching costs. The moat is currently widening on the back of the data-center power buildout and grid electrification cycle, but that tailwind is cyclical capex demand, not a structural improvement in competitive position versus Schneider, ABB, or Emerson.
Management has shifted the portfolio deliberately (exiting hydraulics, adding Tripp Lite and other bolt-ons) toward higher-margin electrical/aerospace, funded growth without diluting shareholders (share count roughly flat to down), and kept leverage moderate at 1.6x net debt/EBITDA.

Key risks
- Data center/AI capex cycle cools or gets pushed out, reversing the current demand surge that's driving multiple expansion
- Cyclical industrial/aerospace exposure means a recession compresses margins and volumes simultaneously
- Competitors (Schneider Electric, ABB, Vertiv) invest aggressively to erode Eaton's electrical share in the hottest growth segment
Catalysts
- Continued grid modernization and data center buildout sustaining above-trend electrical segment growth
- Margin expansion from mix shift toward higher-margin electrical and aerospace products
