FAST Fastenal
Wonderful, disciplined compounder with a real but narrow moat — priced for growth it has not shown in years.
The business
Fastenal distributes industrial and construction supplies (fasteners, tools, safety products, MRO items) through a hub-and-spoke network of branches and, increasingly, on-site vending machines and 'FAST' managed inventory installations at customer facilities. Revenue comes from selling millions of low-ticket SKUs, with growth driven by deepening wallet share at existing large industrial/manufacturing customers via embedded vending and on-site solutions rather than winning new logos.

Moat & management
| Moat | narrow moat |
| Source | switching costs |
| Trajectory | stable |
| Management | excellent |
On-site vending machines and managed inventory installations create real switching costs and sticky, high-visibility relationships with large industrial customers, supporting best-in-class ROIC and margins for a distributor. But the underlying product is largely commoditized fasteners/MRO supplies, so the moat is more about embedded logistics convenience than pricing power or IP, and it faces continuous pressure from Grainger, Amazon Business, and regional distributors.
Conservative balance sheet (net debt/EBITDA 0.08), disciplined reinvestment into the vending/FAST installation network that drives the moat, minimal dilution, and consistent shareholder returns via dividends rather than empire-building M&A.

Key risks
- Industrial production is cyclical; a manufacturing recession compresses volumes and margins meaningfully
- Amazon Business and other e-commerce/distribution disruptors could erode the vending/convenience edge over a decade
- Deceleration already visible (5y revenue CAGR ~5.5%) versus market pricing in ~21%/yr owner-earnings growth is a wide gap
Catalysts
- Continued penetration of FAST/vending installations into existing large accounts (still under-penetrated in mid-size customers)
- Onshoring/reshoring of US manufacturing capacity supporting volume growth
- Data/analytics from installed vending base enabling further wallet-share gains
