GD General Dynamics
Irreplaceable submarine franchise plus Gulfstream; wonderful and durable, but today's price already discounts most of the growth.
The business
General Dynamics earns money in four segments. Gulfstream builds and services business jets. Marine Systems (Electric Boat, Bath, NASSCO) builds US Navy submarines and surface ships, with Electric Boat as lead designer on Columbia and Virginia class submarines. Combat Systems makes land vehicles and munitions, and Technologies (GDIT and Mission Systems) sells IT and C4ISR services and systems, mostly to the US government on long-term contracts.

Nuclear submarine construction is a government-sanctioned near-monopoly, protected by decades of specialized workforce, facilities, and security clearances that no new entrant can replicate, and Columbia is the Navy's top priority program. Gulfstream adds a premium brand and a large installed base that produces service revenue in a concentrated large-cabin jet market. GDIT is the weakest part, a competitive services business with low switching costs.
Novakovic's team is disciplined and owner-like: they convert about 100% of net income to FCF, keep debt moderate, raise the dividend steadily, and buy back shares on a modest, opportunistic basis without empire-building M&A. The main criticism is that shipyard execution and margins have lagged, though much of that comes from industry-wide labor and supply problems.

Key risks
- Persistent submarine cost overruns and labor or supplier shortfalls compressing Marine margins on fixed-price-heavy contracts
- US defense budget politics, continuing resolutions, or shifts in procurement priorities
- Business-jet cyclicality: a recession or wealth shock would hit Gulfstream orders and the G700/G800 ramp
Catalysts
- Marine margin recovery as Columbia and Virginia production stabilizes on a record backlog
- Gulfstream delivery ramp of G700/G800/G400 lifting Aerospace margins and FCF
