The business
Alphabet makes most of its money by selling targeted advertising across Google Search, YouTube, and its ad network. It also earns from Google Cloud, subscriptions, apps, devices, and other bets, with Search still the economic engine. The core business is understandable, but AI-driven changes to search behavior and heavy infrastructure spending make the next decade less predictable than the last.

Google's moat comes from habit, scale, data, distribution, advertiser liquidity, and the reinforcing loop between users, queries, and ad performance. The moat remains wide, but AI answer engines, regulatory limits on default placement, and rising compute intensity prevent calling it widening.
Capital allocation has generally been owner-friendly, with strong buybacks, disciplined balance sheet management, and high-return reinvestment in core platforms. The main concern is whether AI capex remains economically rational rather than becoming an arms race that depresses owner earnings.
