IDXX Idexx Laboratories
Wonderful recurring-revenue diagnostics moat, but priced for growth nearly 3x what a conservative underwrite supports.
The business
IDEXX makes point-of-care diagnostic instruments and consumables for veterinary clinics (analyzers for bloodwork, urinalysis, etc.), runs a network of reference laboratories for advanced testing, and sells practice-management software. Revenue is largely recurring: placed instruments generate a long tail of high-margin consumable and reference-lab testing revenue as vets test more per visit.

Moat & management
| Moat | wide moat |
| Source | switching costs |
| Trajectory | stable |
| Management | excellent |
Dominant share (well over half) of companion-animal diagnostics in the US, reinforced by installed-base switching costs (staff training, integrated software, workflow lock-in) and reference-lab network density that's hard for smaller rivals (Zoetis, Antech/Mars, Heska) to replicate quickly. Pricing power and share have held for over a decade, though competitors are investing harder and pet-spend growth is decelerating, capping upside on 'widening'.
Consistent high-ROIC reinvestment in new instrument platforms and test menu expansion, disciplined balance sheet (net debt/EBITDA 0.51), and steady buybacks that have shrunk share count (-1.3% CAGR) without overpaying via excessive leverage.

Key risks
- Deceleration in US vet clinic visit volumes and discretionary pet spending (already visible in -17% 6m price move)
- Rising competition from Zoetis, Heska, and Mars-owned Antech eroding instrument placement share over time
- Premium multiple leaves little room for error if growth normalizes toward historical high-single-digit rates rather than the ~25%/yr the current price implies
Catalysts
- New analyzer platform cycles (e.g. Catalyst, inVue Dx) driving fresh consumable-attach growth
- Continued international penetration and wellness-testing adoption expanding tests-per-visit
