IEX IDEX Corporation
A genuine niche compounder, but the price already pays for 15% growth it cannot deliver.
The business
IDEX owns dozens of niche businesses making highly engineered fluidics and specialty products — pumps, valves, meters, and optical components — sold into water infrastructure, life sciences, fire safety, and industrial markets. It aims to be #1 or #2 in small, hard-to-enter niches, runs them decentralised, and recycles the strong cash flow into bolt-on acquisitions. It is essentially a disciplined compounder of niche flow-control assets.

Moat & management
| Moat | narrow moat |
| Source | switching costs |
| Trajectory | stable |
| Management | adequate |
Engineered products are designed into customers' systems (OEM specification, regulatory certifications, application engineering), creating switching costs and supporting a 44.7% gross margin rare in industrials. But median ROIC of ~11% is only modestly above the cost of capital and organic growth is anaemic (2.8% revenue CAGR), so the moat protects the niches without conferring compounding power on its own.
Decentralised bolt-on M&A model with sensible leverage (1.3x net debt/EBITDA) and excellent FCF conversion, but share repurchases have barely offset dilution and recent acquisitions have not lifted the top-line trajectory. Disciplined operators, not outstanding allocators of late.

Key risks
- Growth is acquisition-dependent; deal scarcity or overpayment would choke the compounding engine
- Life-science/bioprocessing exposure faces post-COVID destocking and slower capex cycles
- Median ROIC of ~11% leaves thin cushion if niche pricing power erodes or competition intensifies
Catalysts
- Recovery and restocking in life-sciences and bioprocessing end markets
- Rising global water infrastructure and water-treatment spending
- Redeployment of ~$0.6B annual FCF into accretive bolt-on acquisitions
