INCY Incyte
Cash-rich JAK franchise facing a 2028 patent cliff; cheap only if the pipeline replaces Jakafi.
The business
Incyte discovers and sells specialty drugs, mainly in hematology/oncology and immunology-dermatology. About 60% of revenue comes from Jakafi (ruxolitinib) for myelofibrosis, polycythemia vera and GVHD. The rest comes from Opzelura cream (vitiligo and atopic dermatitis), newer launches (Niktimvo, Monjuvi, Zynyz) and high-margin royalties on Jakavi (Novartis, ex-US) and Olumiant (Lilly).

Returns depend on patent exclusivity and the JAK franchise, and US Jakafi exclusivity ends around 2028, after which generics will remove most of its roughly $3B+ of revenue. What survives that cliff is a portfolio of younger products and pipeline bets (Opzelura, povorcitinib, the mutCALR antibody) whose patents run longer but which have not yet proved they can fully replace Jakafi.
Balance sheet is a fortress with net cash of about $3B, and the $2B 2024 Dutch tender bought shares at depressed prices. For years, though, heavy R&D produced few big wins. The new CEO (Meury) has pruned the pipeline and become more disciplined, but has yet to prove he can redeploy Jakafi cash at high returns.

Key risks
- Generic Jakafi entry around 2028 removes the majority of current profit
- Pipeline failures (povorcitinib, mutCALR, Opzelura label expansion) leave the replacement revenue short
- Value-destroying M&A made out of urgency to fill the cliff
- IRA drug-price negotiation and pressure from competing JAK/topical drugs
Catalysts
- Late-stage readouts for the mutCALR antibody and povorcitinib approval in HS/vitiligo
- Opzelura growth in Europe and pediatric use, plus continued buybacks from the net-cash position
