JKHY Jack Henry & Associates
A sticky, debt-free core-banking toll road, but the price already pays for about the 7% it grows.
The business
Jack Henry provides core processing software, digital banking, and payments services to about 1,600 to 1,800 US community banks and credit unions. Roughly 90% of revenue is recurring: multi-year outsourcing, private-cloud hosting, card processing, and transaction fees that grow with clients' accounts and activity. It also cross-sells add-on modules (digital, lending, fraud, faster payments) into an installed base that rarely leaves.

Moat & management
| Moat | wide moat |
| Source | switching costs |
| Trajectory | stable |
| Management | excellent |
Replacing a core system is a risky, multi-year conversion that bank boards avoid, so retention is in the high 90s and contracts renew for 5 to 10 years. Jack Henry's service reputation lets it win share from Fiserv and FIS, and moving clients to its private cloud makes them even stickier. The main threat to the moat is bank consolidation shrinking the client pool.
Management is conservative and owner-like. It grows mostly organically, makes small tuck-in acquisitions, carries almost no debt, and pairs a steadily rising dividend with buybacks that reduce the share count by about 1% a year. One caution: heavy capitalized software spending makes reported earnings look better than true owner earnings.

Key risks
- Community bank and credit union consolidation shrinks the client base and causes deconversion fees to be followed by lost recurring revenue
- Competition from Fiserv, FIS, and cloud-native cores (Temenos, nCino, Thought Machine) in the cloud-core modernization cycle
- Rising capitalized development and cloud-migration costs hold down FCF conversion and margins
Catalysts
- The multi-year move of on-premise clients to Jack Henry's private cloud and its new public-cloud-native core lifts revenue per client and margins
- Share gains from rivals' service problems, plus growth in faster payments and fraud and digital add-ons
