LULU Lululemon Athletica
Damaged premium brand priced for decline; even modest 4% growth beats the market's -8% assumption.
The business
Lululemon designs premium athletic and athleisure apparel (leggings, joggers, tops, outerwear) and sells it mostly through its own stores and e-commerce, capturing full retail margin. Because it controls distribution and rarely discounts, it earns gross margins in the mid-50s. Growth now comes mainly from China and other international markets, while the core Americas business is flat to declining.

The brand still supports premium pricing and a vertically integrated, full-price model that produces about 38% ROIC. But apparel brands have no switching costs, and Alo, Vuori, and cheaper copycats have taken share in the Americas. The drop in operating margin from roughly 23% to under 18% shows the pricing power weakening.
Capital allocation has been disciplined: no debt beyond leases, buybacks have cut the share count about 3% a year, and expansion is self-funded. However, product freshness slipped in the core market, the CEO is leaving, and activist and founder pressure have made leadership and strategy uncertain.

Key risks
- Fashion and brand fatigue in the Americas as Alo, Vuori and lower-priced dupes take share and force markdowns
- Tariffs, the end of de minimis duty exemptions, and Asian sourcing costs keep squeezing gross margin
- Leadership change and activist pressure could lead to poor strategic choices or margin-dilutive moves to chase growth
Catalysts
- A new CEO and a product refresh that bring back full-price selling and comparable-store growth in the Americas
- Continued 20%+ growth in China and international markets, plus buybacks at a roughly 11% FCF yield shrinking the share count
