MA Mastercard
A wonderful toll road, but today’s price already asks for near-perfect compounding.
The business
Mastercard operates a global payments network that authorizes, clears, and settles card and digital transactions between consumers, merchants, banks, and fintechs. It earns high-margin fees tied to payment volumes, cross-border activity, and value-added services such as fraud prevention, data analytics, authentication, and loyalty. It does not take credit risk like a bank, which makes the economics cleaner and more predictable.

Moat & management
| Moat | wide moat |
| Source | network effect |
| Trajectory | stable |
| Management | excellent |
The moat is built on a two-sided global acceptance network: consumers want cards accepted everywhere, and merchants accept cards because consumers carry them. Scale, brand trust, bank relationships, fraud tools, and regulatory know-how reinforce the network, though fee regulation and alternative payment rails keep the moat from widening without limit.
Management has paired high-return reinvestment in the core network and services with disciplined buybacks and modest leverage. Share count has declined, debt is sensible, and capital allocation has generally favored owner value over empire building.
