NTAP NetApp
Excellent cash-generative storage franchise with a narrow, stable moat — but priced for growth it has never delivered.
The business
NetApp sells enterprise data storage and management systems (hybrid, all-flash arrays) and increasingly licenses cloud-native storage software (Cloud Volumes ONTAP, Spot) that runs on AWS, Azure, and GCP. Revenue comes from hardware/software product sales plus a growing recurring support and subscription tail. Customers are enterprises managing large, mission-critical data estates.

Storage systems are deeply embedded in customer data infrastructure — migrating petabytes of mission-critical data is costly and risky, which supports NetApp's 70%+ gross margins and 27.6% median ROIC. But the moat is not widening: storage is progressively commoditized by hyperscaler-native storage, Pure Storage's flash-first architecture, and Dell/HPE bundling, which is why revenue has compounded at only ~2.9%/yr despite excellent returns on the capital already deployed.
Disciplined capital allocation — shrinking share count at -2.6% CAGR, net debt/EBITDA of just 0.34x, and FCF conversion above 1.0x — returning cash rather than chasing growth through overpriced acquisitions.

Key risks
- Hyperscaler-native and cloud-first storage erodes on-prem TAM structurally over time
- Flash-native competitors (Pure Storage) and bundled incumbents (Dell, HPE) compress pricing/share
- Revenue has been essentially flat-to-low-single-digit for years — little evidence of a growth re-acceleration lever
Catalysts
- Mix shift toward higher-margin, recurring cloud storage software (Cloud Volumes) improving durability of earnings
- AI/unstructured data growth could modestly lift storage demand if NetApp captures a share of it
