PTC PTC Inc.
Sticky PLM franchise worth owning, but the price already assumes ~12% growth; underwrite 9%, so no margin of safety.
The business
PTC sells engineering software to manufacturers: Creo (CAD), Windchill (PLM), and Codebeamer (ALM), sold mostly as recurring subscriptions. Its customers design and manage complex physical products like industrial equipment, aerospace parts, medical devices, and cars. Revenue renews year after year because product data and engineering workflows run on its platforms.

Moat & management
| Moat | wide moat |
| Source | switching costs |
| Trajectory | stable |
| Management | adequate |
PLM systems hold decades of a manufacturer's product data and are woven into its engineering, supply chain, and compliance processes, so ripping them out is costly and risky, which shows in retention rates in the mid-90s. Creo competes with Dassault and Siemens in an oligopoly where customers seldom switch. AI-native design tools and Siemens' bundling are the threats to watch, but there is little sign of erosion yet.
The subscription transition, margin expansion, and debt paydown after the Codebeamer and ServiceMax deals all went well, and buybacks now absorb most FCF. However, the 9.7% median ROIC, held down by acquired goodwill, and the 2025 CEO change point to M&A-heavy capital allocation that remains unproven at these prices.

Key risks
- AI-driven generative design or cloud-native entrants (Onshape-style competition, Autodesk, Siemens) weaken Creo's position over time
- Exposure to the manufacturing cycle and to tariffs or industrial slowdowns, which hurts new seat growth
- Paying too much on acquisitions, plus ASC 606 timing noise in TTM figures that may flatter the 54% operating margin
Catalysts
- Windchill+ SaaS migration lifts ARPU and retention
- Buybacks retire 2-3% of shares a year as debt falls
