PYPL PayPal
A shrinking moat priced for decline: about 10% cash yield plus buybacks beats the -2% growth the price implies.
The business
PayPal runs a two-sided payments network. Merchants pay it a take rate on transactions processed through branded PayPal checkout, Venmo, and unbranded processing (Braintree). It also earns money from interest on customer balances, credit products, and FX. Branded checkout carries high margins, while Braintree is low-margin, high-volume processing.

PayPal has roughly 430M accounts and is trusted by merchants, which still gives branded checkout a real two-sided network. But Apple Pay, Shop Pay, card-network tokenization, and stored-card wallets keep pulling share at the point of checkout, and branded share has been slipping for years. Venmo and the new focus on profitable growth may slow that erosion, but have not yet reversed it.
They have bought back stock aggressively (about 7% a year) at what look like low prices, and the balance sheet is conservative. The earlier acquisition spree (Honey, Paidy) destroyed value, and the turnaround under Chriss is still being proven.

Key risks
- Apple Pay and other wallets keep taking branded checkout share, compressing the take rate
- Mix shifts toward low-margin Braintree, so revenue grows but gross profit doesn't
- Credit losses and regulation (CFPB, BNPL rules, interchange caps)
Catalysts
- Venmo monetization (Venmo debit, Pay with Venmo) and the branded checkout redesign
- Buybacks retiring about 7% of shares a year at a roughly 10% owner-earnings yield
