Sturdy, under-loved consumables franchise priced for decline; modest growth plus normalizing cash flow beats a -11% bar.

The business

Solventum, spun out of 3M in April 2024, sells hospital and clinical consumables: advanced wound care (V.A.C. negative-pressure therapy, Tegaderm dressings), infection prevention and sterilization, IV site management, Littmann stethoscopes, and dental restoratives and orthodontics. It also sells Health Information Systems software for clinical coding and revenue-cycle work, used by thousands of US hospitals. Most of its revenue is recurring, high-volume consumables bought through GPO contracts and clinician preference, plus software subscriptions. It sold its Purification & Filtration unit to Thermo Fisher to pay down spin debt.

Moat & management

Moat ▟ narrow moat
Sourceswitching costs

Managementadequate

Clinician habit and trusted brands (Tegaderm, Littmann, V.A.C.), hospital formulary and GPO entrenchment, regulatory clearances, and the HIS coding software's integration into hospital workflows keep returns above the cost of capital. Several categories are mature and price-competitive, though: Smith+Nephew and Convatec in wound care, generics in dental, and AI-native coding entrants in HIS. Five years of near-zero revenue growth show limited pricing power.

CEO Bryan Hanson is running a sensible playbook: fix supply chain and ERP separation, cut costs, use divestiture proceeds to deleverage, and prune the portfolio. Spin costs, stranded overhead and taxes have depressed reported FCF, and they have no long record of disciplined capital allocation yet.

Key risks

  • The HIS coding franchise could be disrupted by generative-AI coding tools and EHR vendors (Epic) moving in, eroding the highest-margin segment
  • Execution risk in separating from 3M (ERP cutover, supply chain, transition service agreements) could depress margins and FCF for years
  • Mature, GPO-driven categories with price pressure and share loss in wound care and dental could keep organic growth near zero

Catalysts

  • Deleveraging after the P&F sale and the end of separation costs should unlock normalized FCF and later buybacks
  • Margin expansion from the cost-out program and portfolio pruning toward higher-growth MedSurg
