TER Teradyne
Fine duopoly test franchise, but the price underwrites a permanent AI boom.
The business
Teradyne sells automated test equipment (ATE) that chipmakers and OEMs use to verify semiconductors work before shipment — SoC test, memory test, plus system-level test and wireless test. Revenue comes from selling testers and, increasingly, from recurring consumables, service, and applications support tied to an installed base of tens of thousands of systems. A smaller robotics segment (Universal Robots cobots, MiR mobile robots) sells factory automation. Demand scales with device complexity and test intensity, not just unit volumes — AI accelerators and HBM require far more test seconds per die.

SoC test is effectively a duopoly with Advantest, and customers write test programs against a specific platform and must maintain correlation across a global fleet — re-qualifying on a rival's hardware is expensive and risky, so installed base tends to persist for a decade. But the moat is narrow, not wide: Advantest has repeatedly taken large share on single-socket wins (mobile applications processors, HBM), and a handful of customers hold enormous negotiating leverage. Scale in applications engineering and the recurring service annuity reinforce the position without making it impregnable.
The core test business is run well — net cash balance sheet, disciplined capex, share count flat to down, no dilution games. Capital allocation outside the core has been the weak spot: the robotics roll-up (Universal Robots, MiR, AutoGuide) consumed roughly a billion dollars and has delivered write-downs and sub-scale returns rather than the second growth engine promised.

Key risks
- Extreme customer concentration and socket risk — losing one flagship SoC or HBM program to Advantest can erase a year of growth, as happened with mobile
- Deep cyclicality: this is capital equipment, and trough years can cut owner earnings in half; the 0.4% five-year revenue CAGR is the honest through-cycle signal, not the current AI-driven upswing
- Geopolitical and export-control exposure to China, historically a large revenue share, plus emerging domestic Chinese ATE competition at the low end
- Robotics remains a capital sink with weak returns and credible competition from lower-cost Asian cobot makers
- Test intensity gains are real but lumpy — a shift in packaging or a customer insourcing test could compress the addressable opportunity
Catalysts
- AI compute and HBM test intensity structurally raising test seconds per wafer, lifting the whole ATE TAM
- System-level test and advanced-packaging test adoption expanding content per device
- Exit or restructuring of the underperforming robotics segment, redirecting capital to buybacks and the core franchise
