VRT Vertiv
Excellent operator riding the AI build-out, but the price assumes 25% growth; a narrow-moat cyclical can't deliver that.
The business
Vertiv sells the critical power (UPS, switchgear, busway) and thermal management (precision cooling, liquid cooling, CDUs) equipment that keeps data centers and telecom networks running, plus a large recurring services business maintaining that installed base. Revenue is driven by hyperscaler, colocation and enterprise data center capex, which AI workloads have sharply accelerated. Services and the installed base give some annuity-like revenue on top of a lumpy equipment cycle.

Moat & management

A global manufacturing footprint, one of the largest field-service networks, and deep engineering ties with hyperscalers and chip vendors (NVIDIA reference designs) create real advantages in speed and reliability, where failure costs are huge. But Schneider, Eaton, ABB and Asian competitors sell similar products, hyperscalers have strong buying power and can multi-source, and the liquid-cooling transition reopens the competitive field, so the moat is narrow.
Under CEO Giordano Albertazzi, operating margin went from mid-single digits to roughly 19% through pricing discipline and the Vertiv Operating System; leverage fell from a post-SPAC heavy load to about 0.6x, with bolt-on deals in liquid cooling and services. Buybacks and dividends are modest; share count is roughly flat, and they have mostly avoided dilution.

Key risks
- AI data center capex is cyclical and concentrated; any digestion pause by a few hyperscalers could cut orders and margins sharply
- Competition from Schneider, Eaton and new liquid-cooling entrants, plus hyperscaler pricing power, could compress today's peak margins
- Technology shifts (direct-to-chip or immersion cooling, rack-level power architectures) could commoditize or bypass legacy product lines
Catalysts
- Continued backlog growth and rising content per MW as rack densities move toward liquid cooling
- Services attach on a rapidly growing installed base, lifting recurring revenue mix and through-cycle margins
⚠ maintenance capex ≈ min(capex, D&A), capped at FCF · Price pays for ~25%/yr owner-earnings growth over 10y (reverse DCF); model credits 10%. · Rich vs our conservative value, but a quality business is not a short — stance is WAIT for a better price, not sell.
